Appletreewick to Grassington, 5 miles
Today we continued our walk up the River Wharfe.
Greetings from a dog in Appletreewick. The British love their dogs, and well-behaved dogs are welcome almost everywhere: pubs, restaurants, public transport. |
Yorkshire pasture land. |
More lambs. |
The Hebden "swing bridge". The stepping stones are an alternative way to cross the River Wharfe. |
More stepping stones. They provided a direct path from the Dales Way to Linton Church (in the background at right). |
A closer look at Linton Church. Like many of the churches along the Dales Way, it dates to the 12th century. |
The two weirs at Linton, just across the river from Grassington. The powerhouse at the upper weir is once again producing power, but the bottom weir is no longer in use. The mill has been converted to housing. Linton Falls is just off the left of the photo. |
An interesting seat carved out of a tree stump. It, too, has coins pounded into the wood (inset). |
Birds, Birds, Birds
There are lots of birds along the Dales Way. Here are a few I managed to photograph today.
Wren |
The European robin is much smaller than the American robin and is included in the flycatcher group, rather than the thrushes. This one has caught a flying insect and is eating it. |
Pheasants were fairly common, and announced their presence with a loud squawk. |
