Along the Volga - Yaroslavl to Rybinsk

Friday, 21 September 2018

After visiting Yaroslavl, we got back on the ship and cruised back up the Volga, passing small towns and lots of trees.

Tutayev

Tutayev lies about half way between Yaroslavl and Rybinsk on the Volga. A number of old churches rise above the trees on the banks.
Another church and bell tower.
And this church is clearly undergoing major restoration.

Rybinsk Lock

Entering the Rybinsk lock. The accompanying Rybinsk Dam creates a large reservoir, reportedly the largest man-made lake at the time. We were told that it is 37 miles long, but averages only 18 ft deep.
The upstream gate is of a design we were unfamiliar with. The top half pivots upstream. This leaves a clearance of only about 3 m for ships and barges. I would have thought these large vessels would have a deeper draft.
A closer look at the gear and chain drive that pivots the lock gate.
And like yesterday, the sides of the lock are lined with gulls.
At the lake end of the lock channel is the Mother Volga statue.
