Aside from the religious (Hindu) objections to leather, there are practical reasons why leather is not a great choice in India -- especially during monsoon.
Lon's work boots are in a class by themselves. The photo below shows what happens when leather, pulp, and humidity come together:
Not pretty!
But the pulp does make for a nice close-up:
My leather Birkenstocks merely mildew. I guess the pulp provides the nutrients for mold!
It gets even worse if we put the shoes in the cabinets provided for shoe storage. No air circulation makes the mold and mildew grow even faster!
