The original plan was to fly from Uluru (Ayers Rock) to Sydney, but flight schedules change, so instead we had a 5-hour, 440 km, drive through the outback to Alice Springs, where we caught a flight to Sydney. While it meant we had to get up early - long before dawn, it did give us a real taste of the outback: super-huge cattle stations, road trains (up to 5 long trailers behind a single truck tractor), and traditional roadhouses with diners and accommodations.
