Tanzania 9 - Ngorongoro Crater - Vultures & Jackals

20 December 2014

Another story from the Ngorongoro Crater.

We came across this scrum of vultures and a marabou stork. Every so often, the stork would wade into the middle and take a bite. (Didn't know that storks eat carrion.) We knew there had to be a carcass in the middle, so waited to find out what they were feasting on.
From time to time, there was a break in the outer wall of vultures, and we could clearly see that the carcass was the remains of a zebra.
We were about to move on when we noticed two jackals approaching from the left. Despite being hugely outnumbered, the vultures immediately gave way to the jackals. (I would have expected the vultures to be more possessive of their food.)
The second jackal came into the scene, and further chased off the vultures.
The jackals attacked the carcass with gusto.
Most of the vultures left; a few wait for another turn at the zebra.
Some of the vultures perched in nearby trees, but most circled the area aloft.
