Hundar

Tuesday, 8 September 2015

We stayed at a hotel in Diskit, the main city in the Nubra Valley, but in the late afternoon we went for a short excursion about 7 km down the road to the resort village of Hundar. Hundar is mostly tourist camps -- everything from primitive to luxury. The season is nearly over, so almost everything was closed. But it was a nice walk.

The Shayok River is lined with dunes between Diskit and Hundar.
This landslide area looked as if it had been painted with watercolors.
Our first stop was to visit a "mani wall" (prayer wall) just outside Hundar. It is one of the most extensive and oldest such walls in India, and is said to contain all 1000 names of the Buddha.
This prayer rock is a mandala. Others were just script.
On our walk through the village of Hundar, we were finally able to see a "dzo" up close. A dzo is a cross between a cow and a yak. (Strictly speaking "dzo" is a male, while a female is a "dzomo".)
