Antarctic Sound - Humpback Whales

Sunday, 23 February 2020

We saw a number of humpback whales while we were in the Antarctic Sound between Brown Bluff and Devil Island. Some came quite near the ship.

A nice set of tail flukes.
A different whale dives and shows flukes. Humpback whales can be identified by the patterns on the underside of their flukes.
Humpback whales are noted for their love of breaching. Several were visible in the near distance, notable because they made huge splashes as they returned to the water. This slide show is slowed by 10x (It takes 20 seconds, but the original set of photos covered 2 seconds.).
