Antarctica - Narrow Channels and Port Lockroy

Saturday, 22 February 2020

More magnificent and daunting scenery as we traveled through the Lemaire Channel and the Neumeyer Channel, with Port Lockroy in between.

We entered the narrow Lemaire Channel at sunrise.
This was a busy area of Antarctica. We saw several other tour ships on this passage.
At times, the tops of the mountains were shrouded in fog.
One glacier had an impressive amount of red algae.
The path from our rocky Zodiac landing site to the museum at Port Lockroy was narrow and rocky.
The Port Lockroy museum has a restored kitchen on display.

After leaving the Neumeyer Channel, we entered the much wider Gerlach Strait, and encountered our first large piece of shelf ice. The large rectangular dimensions reminded me of the Borg ship in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
There were quite a few humpback whales in this area. Whenever possible, our ship would try to follow whales for a while so that we could get a good look at them.
