Antarctica - Seals and Penguins

Sunday, 23 February 2020

Brown Bluff. Plenty of drama as leopard seals and penguins clash.

Leopard seals are a fearsome predator in the southern seas, but they can look totally "chill" when sleeping on sea ice.
How close did we get? This photo says it all. (The Zodiacs queued up to get this view.)
In the water, a leopard seal looks more menacing as its snout emerges from the surface.
A leopard seal makes a meal of a penguin, while a kelp gull flies nearby, waiting for the leftovers.
A gentoo penguin swims in a protected area closer to shore.
An Antarctic fur seal.
On land, penguins ignore the seals.
Gentoo penguins on the move!

Devil Island.

Lon and I took separate hikes on Devil Island. Lon took the hike to the top of the ridge - orange cones mark the path to the top.
I took the shorter hike up to the edge of a glacier. The rocks here were quite interesting.
Gentoo penguins on the ice.
As we walked to and from the Zodiac landing site (at upper right), we had to wade in the water to avoid molting penguins.
