Hyderabad - Part 1

I'm seeing India by going sightseeing while Lon travels for business. Today we're in Hyderabad, India's 5th or 6th largest city (depending upon who's list you're looking at).

Hyderabad is a beautiful city -- and clean -- exceptionally clean for India. It's a pleasant city known for its jewelers -- especially pearls.

Unfortunately from my perspective, museums and most shops are closed on Friday, so my tours were mostly limited to outdoor monuments and such.

This is the Charminar (literally, four minarets), a monument built in 1591. The guidebook pictures (and this composite photo -- you can't get far enough back to see the whole structure in one photo) make it look like it's in a huge plaza. The next photo shows that this is far from the truth!

Other sights of the day include:

The magnificent Birla Mandir, completed in 1976. This is one of four smaller shrines before you get to the main shrine, which is off  to the left. Cameras are not allowed inside, so I have no picture of the main structure.
The statue of the Buddha in the middle of Hussain Sagar, a reservoir between Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It was built in the 16th Century to provide water to Hyderabad. The Buddha was added in 1992.
And finally, this interesting building is visible from our hotel room. I loved the contrast of the reflected palm trees and the artwork on the building's windows.
