Kerala Backwaters - Temples & Churches

Tuesday, 23 September 2014

Temples and churches seem to be about equally represented along the backwaters, although the churches tend to stand out more. Churches particularly seemed to want to out-do each other with their vividly painted exteriors. Temples usually seemed to be more interested in blending into the surroundings.

In chronological order, a small sampling of temples and churches:

Obviously, a church.
A traditional-style Hindu temple. Kerala temples rarely (if ever?) allow non-Hindus to enter the temple grounds. Other places in India, most temples merely restrict access to the "sanctum sanctorum" of the gods, but allow non-Hindus to enter the property.
This church has adopted the Hindu tradition of a temple flagpole (far right of photo).
One of the more brightly painted temples we saw.
It would be easy to pass up this Hindu temple if it lacked the flagpole.
Clearly a contemporary church. The sign is entirely in Malayalam, so we couldn't tell what type of church it is, although the picture on it looked more Orthodox (Syrian) than Roman Catholic or protestant.
A rustic temple.
This temple seemed to be preparing for a festival -- Navratri / Durga Puja?
