Kochi

Monday, 22 September 2014

Kochi is an island city. Our hotel is on "Willingdon Island" -- mostly land reclaimed from the shallows of Vembanad Lake with soil from dredging operations.

View of Wellingdon Island from our hotel room. The island is mostly industrial shipping and has a major base for the Indian Navy.

View from our hotel across the water to the Mattancherry area of Kochi. The outlet to the Arabian Sea is at the left.

Chinese fishing nets were introduced to Kochi centuries ago. They are not found in other areas of India. It takes a crew of several men to lower and raise the nets.
The Indian way: the  old meets the new.
Fresh (very fresh!) fish for sale along the beach.
Ross contemplates a large prawn.
This gives a better picture of the prawn.
Practically the size of a small lobster.

Some members of our family take exception to sentiments expressed in this painted wall.
