Kochi to Munnar

Wednesday, 24 September 2014

The trip from Kochi to Munnar is only 160 km, but it's a long drive -- 4 to 5 hours. (That's 20 to 25 mph!). The road is two-lane, narrow, and winding -- especially once you start climbing the Western Ghats -- the rim of mountains on the west side of India.

In the lower parts of the drive, there were rubber plantations, many with pineapples growing underneath. We pulled off the side of the road to look at some trees, and the landowner came by and helped explain the process.

Slashes on the rubber tree direct the latex to the collection cup.
The latex itself is stretchy -- even before any processing. The "stretcher" is Jairaj, our outstanding guide.
Coffee and black pepper were also common along the road.

Black pepper grows as a vine on a tree.
The southern tip of India is the spice region of India. I haven't any good pictures, but cardamom and cocoa are also commonly grown here.

As we climbed the Ghats, we passed by several waterfalls.
Munnar is near the peak of the mountains, and is a major tea growing region.

A close-up of the red-flowering trees found all over Munnar. I think this is a variety of "Indian Coral Tree" (Erythrina), but nothing completely fits the descriptions I have.
The mist (and light rain) came in as we walked to our hotel.
