Thirumalai Nayak Palace & Madurai

Friday, 26 September 2014

The Thirumalai Nayak Palace once occupied almost four times its current footprint. Like most historic structures in India, it had fallen into disrepair, but parts have been restored and make for an interesting visit.

The main audience hall is now used as an outdoor auditorium.
A more detailed look at the front porticos.
Many of the ceilings have spectacular painted designs.

Looking down a side gallery.

Other Madurai Sights

Our hotel sits atop a hillock with spectacular views of the surrounding area. It is also a haven for birds and wildlife.

Peacock high in a banyan tree. (Yes, somehow they do fly!)
On our way to town in the morning, a pair of mongoose (mongeese?) did a "pas de deux" to get out of the road. "Dancing with the Stars" anyone?

On the street in Madurai.
The Meenakshi Temple towers at the end of this commercial street.
