We started our cruise mid-afternoon. We're headed for St. Petersburg on a series of canals, rivers, and lakes that link the two cities with commercial barge traffic, and quite a few river cruise ships.

Passenger ships dock at the North River Terminal on the Moscow-Volga Canal, about half-way between Sheremetyevo Airport and Moscow city center. The building at the port was under restoration. |
All along our route there were a lot of cranes like these off-loading sand and gravel from barges. |
Our first of 18 locks on the route: Lock No. 6 on the Moscow-Volga Canal. |
