Overnight we completed our passage through the Moscow-Volga Canal, and entered the Volga River at Dubna.
As the navigable passage from Moscow to St. Petersburg was built, a number of dams were constructed, flooding numerous towns and villages. Most of the submerged structures were destroyed, but this bell tower in Kalyazin remains as a small island just off the new river bank. |

The lock at Uglich. |
Our ship, the Viking Akun, at the dock in Uglich. As are most river ships, it's long and narrow. |
Day or night, gulls followed the river boats. Here gulls are standing on gravel on a barge. |
Almost midnight, but the gulls are ready to swoop down for goodies stirred up as the lock at Rybinsk pumps water to raise and lower ships and barges. |
