Moscow Metro

Monday, 17 September 2018

We're on a Viking Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We arrived in Moscow yesterday afternoon, and today is the first of our three days touring Moscow. We used the Metro to get to the city center -- it's inexpensive (cheap, even), convenient, and fast.

In addition to providing transportation, the Metro is practically an art museum in its own right. Especially the older, city center stations are filled with amazing art.

We got off the train at Mayakovskaya just to view the station. The wall were tiled with marble.
The station is wide and airy. Each of the ceiling recesses has mosaic artwork.
Built during Stalin's time, the subjects are very Soviet. This one is for Industry.
Sports were also prominent.
But military themes were probably the most prevalent. Here planes fly by the Kremlin and Red Square.
Paratroopers.
We got back on the train and traveled two more stops to the Teatralnaya station, next to the Bolshoi Theater. Once there, we crossed underground (and down & up amazingly tall escalators) to the Ploshchad Revolutsii station.

The Ploshchad Revolutsii station is noted for its bronzes.
As you can see, it is good luck to rub the nose of the soldier's dog.
From here it was a very short walk to Red Square.
