Uglich

Thursday, 20 September 2018

Uglich is a pretty little town on the Volga. It's major claim to fame is that Ivan the Terrible's youngest son (and last heir), Dmitry, was exiled to Uglich, but several years later was found dead under highly suspicious circumstances -- assassination (likely) or unfortunate accident (unlikely)? We spent an afternoon here, viewing historic buildings in the kremlin and visiting a home.

The Uglich kremlin as seen from the Volga. The kremlin walls were taken down a long time ago, but the important buildings have been restored. From left: the Church of Demetrios of the Blood (also known, less dramatically, as the Church of Prince Dmitry the Martyr), Cathedral of the Transfiguration, and another church.
A closer look at the "Dmitry Church".
The traditional five domes above the Church.
Cathedral of the Transfiguration.
I never got the name of this church.
The bell tower, whose bell's clapper was "exiled" to Siberia for the crime of announcing Dmitry's death.
A closer look at the top of the bell tower.
I liked the fancy brick work on the house where Dmitry lived.
After visiting the kremlin, we had a visit with a teacher who lived an an old family home in town. Each of the old houses in this part of town had an extensive garden.
When possible, Russians love to grow their own vegetables and pickle/can them for use all the long winter.
