I had pictured the Amazon as “jungle” overhanging the river in a dark, dense canopy. Instead I found broad rivers with substantial development along the shores, along with vibrant indigenous communities working to make a better life for their children.
I’ll start with general impressions of the landscape.

We were traveling at the annual low water mark. In the wet season, the river rises 10 meters (33 feet).

While the US State Department warned of runaway wildfires, we only saw the occasional smoke from annual burning of agricultural fields. |

At low water, sandy beaches become plentiful. This is Paranpura Beach on the Rio Ucayali. |
|
Threatening rain clouds. Lightning was somewhat concerning, but we didn’t get wet, and the storm never got too close. |
