So what do you do on an “exploration” on the Amazon?
In the low water season, it is usually a combination of riding in a skiff looking on the shore for interesting birds & other critters, then a “forest walk” through the rainforest looking for more birds, critters, and interesting flora. Or we may visit an indigenous community. It all depends upon the day.

All of our excursions start on a skiff. |
If we were going onshore, there were always stair to navigate. Each year as the water rises, the current set of steps gets swept away. They need to be rebuilt as the river retreats in the dry season.
|
Most often the steps were cut from the muddy bank, but here steps were cut into a large log to make easily accessible stairs. |

Guide Juan Carlos had his machete at the ready to make sure we could navigate the ever-changing rainforest trails. |

Viewing giant lily pads. |

Snack break in the Pacaya Samiria reserve. |

A bar tent was set up on the Paranapura Beach, but the event was cut short by the imminent arrival of a thunderstorm. |
