Greenland - 2 - Towns & Villages

15-22 August 2025

Tasiilaq

Tasiilaq, with a population of about 2,000 is the largest town in east Greenland. We had a full day to learn about the town and its environs.

15 August
Tasiilaq sprawls along the side of King Oscar Bay.

16 August
Hotel Ammassilik (another name for Tasiilaq) is at the top of a steep hill.

View of Tasiilaq from the hotel.

Fish drying - a common sight in Greenland.

Tasiilaq Harbor.

Sled dogs are not pets - they are essential partners for winter transportation.

A garden project sponsored by Nat Hab is using raised bed greenhouses to grow vegetables and greens for the Tasiilaq community. Traditional Greenlandic culture (Inuit) does not use many plants other than native berries, as the climate is not amenable to agriculture.

One of the raised beds is used to grow flowers.

Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers is just outside Tasiilaq. It's an easy and beautiful hike

16 August
The town cemetery is at the beginning of the Valley of Flowers.

The Valley has several small lakes along a stream.

Anthony (one of our two guides for Greenland) demonstrates the water-holding and purifying capacity of moss.

A small waterfall towards the end of the valley.

Midges were annoying on this hike, so most of us wore head nets.

Small waterfall near the end of the valley.

Tinit (Tiniteqilaq)

Tinit is a small village of about 100 people on Sermilik Fjord visible from Base Camp.

Sled dogs in Tinit.

20 August
Some dogs are kept on rocky islands near Tinit. Since they won't leave the island, they can run free instead of being chained. Their owners come out frequently to make sure they have food and fresh water.

Another dog on the island. This particular island had about six dogs on it.

Kulusuk

Kulusuk is a substantial town - for east Greenland - with a population of about 500. It has the only airport in east Greenland.

21 August
A view of the airport and the Hotel Kulusuk (largest building) from the ridge separating the airport from the town.

Fog temporarily shrouding the airport.

Art on the side of Hotel Kulusuk: polar bears, seals, and lots of fish.
