West Fjords
In Iceland, there are fjords outside the East Fjords and West Fjords, but in the east and west, fjords are the defining feature of the landscape. The drives are spectacular and difficult, clinging to steep sides and frequently unpaved.

A cirque on the side of Sugandafjörður. These formations are found in several places in the West Fjords, and they are sometimes called "troll chairs". The most famous of these cirques, Naustahvilft, is directly across Skutulsfjörður from the town of Ísafjörður. Unfortunately, when we were in Ísafjörður it was shrouded in fog. |
Of course, eventually a fjord opens into the ocean.
