Iceland - 17 - Highlands 3

14 August 2025

After Landmannalauger we mostly traveled roads that were accessible with conventional vehicles. We spent most of the day in Þjórsárdalur ("Thor's Valley").

Gjáin

Our first stop was Gjáin, an unexpected "oasis" filled with waterfalls, ponds, and fascinating basalt - a garden for the gods.

A small rivulet in Gjáin.

Basalt columns laying horizontally.

Gjárfoss, one of the larger waterfalls in Gjáin, has interesting basalt around it.

After Gjáin, we took a short walk to nearby Stöng, then visited the Commonwealth Farm - covered in an earlier post.

Hjálparfoss

Hjálparfoss is in the same area, in its own small valley.

Hjálparfoss. The waterfalls are on separate streams; the waters merge in the pond below the falls.
