After Landmannalauger we mostly traveled roads that were accessible with conventional vehicles. We spent most of the day in Þjórsárdalur ("Thor's Valley").
Gjáin
 |
Our first stop was Gjáin, an unexpected "oasis" filled with waterfalls, ponds, and fascinating basalt - a garden for the gods. |

Basalt columns laying horizontally. |
 |
Gjárfoss, one of the larger waterfalls in Gjáin, has interesting basalt around it. |
After
Gjáin, we took a short walk to nearby Stöng, then visited the Commonwealth Farm - covered in an earlier post.
Hjálparfoss
 |
Hjálparfoss is in the same area, in its own small valley. |

Hjálparfoss. The waterfalls are on separate streams; the waters merge in the pond below the falls. |
