Iceland - 18 - Canyons, Valleys, and Heaths

11-15 August,  23 August - 4 September, 2025

Trying to organize the sights of Iceland is a challenge, so this is the post for all those that were too short for their own post.

Fjaðrárglijúfur

12 August
Fjaðrárglijúfur is a beautiful canyon just off the Ring Road near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The canyon is short, but deep. We walked the eastern rim.

The upper end of the canyon.

Looking upstream from the lower end of the canyon.

Heydalur

31 August
Heydalur is a valley at the base of Mjóifjörður in the West Fjords. The Heydalur farm has been converted into a guesthouse with restaurant and activities (swimming pool, "hot pots", horses, campground). We took a short hike up the stream that runs up the valley.

Looking up the valley.

Dynjandisheiði

2 September
Most of the time the roads hug the coast around the fjords, but occasionally, you can take a road across the heaths that separate the fjords.

Above the Dynjandi waterfall is an extensive heath, Dynjandisheiði.

Dynjandisheiði - mosses (and a few other low plants), lichens, and rock.
