Mountains - almost exclusively volcanic - are a defining feature of Iceland.

Driving by the Skaftafell area in south Iceland. |

Approaching Egilsstaðir in east Iceland. |

The drive between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn traverses a vast lunar-like landscape, the Möðrudalsöræfi area. We were advised to make sure we had plenty of gas and snacks to get through this 150 km stretch with very limited services. |
 |
As we traveled this area, there were several pull-outs with impressive 360° views. |

The last ridge before descending into the Mývatn area. |

View from the parking lot at Viti crater at the base of the Krafla volcano. The parking lot for Leirhnjukur is at the lower right edge of the photo. |

A view from Dimmuborgir - Krafla? |
4 September
 |
Helgafell, near Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. |
 |
The classic view of Kirkjufell, on Breiðafjörður, near Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It looks like a pointed witch's hat. |
 |
But when you're not looking at it at the end, Kirkjufell looks like a far more conventional mountain. |
