Tanzania 24 - Lake Manyara National Park - Birds

26 December 2014

Birds are a major attraction at Lake Manyara. This post (mostly) focuses on species we did not see anywhere else.

Fish eagle.
I liked the grey heron and yellow-billed stork hunched up in the marsh.
A bit later, both had moved to more photogenic positions and were joined by an Egyptian goose.
A closer look at the yellow-billed stork.
African spoonbill.
Glossy ibis are dark, and silhouette against the water.
The African jacana has a blue beak and forehead. Not visible here are the absurdly long toes adapted for standing on floating vegetation.
Fan-tailed widowbird. If I were back in the U.S., I would take it for a red-winged blackbird.
Black-winged stilt. I loved the way they walked and dipped in unison.
