Tanzania 8 - Ngorongoro Crater - The Hyenas and the Jackal

19 December 2014

On our afternoon drive, we witnessed an interesting interaction between a hyena family, a jackal, and our vehicles. Here's the story as it unfolded over about 20 minutes.

We spied a hyena family in the distance. With binoculars, it was obvious that they were eating a carcass of some sort, and that a jackal was also hanging around, hoping to get a few leftovers.
Here you can clearly see an adult hyena with some sort of leg in it's mouth. A second part of the kill is in the foreground. The jackal has retreated a bit and is off to the right (not pictured).
The hyenas continue to eat, and the jackal has come closer.
One of the young hyenas is wandering off, while the jackal continues to hope for a morsel of food.
The jackal decides to follow the young hyena towards the road and our vehicles.
Neither the hyena nor the jackal seem disturbed by the other's presence.
The young hyena comes right up to our vehicle to investigate.
The jackal doesn't get as close. It stays behind the vehicle in a "stand your ground" pose.
The second hyena cub comes over to see what's going on.
They decide that we're not terribly interesting and return to their parents.
The jackal hangs around for a few more minutes, then takes off for places unknown.
