Adalaj Vav

Wednesday, 29 March 2017

Adalaj Vav is a stepwell between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. I’ve been here twice before, but Lon was always busy with business. As it is one of the two most elegant stepwells in India (the other is the Rani ki Vav near Patan), it’s worth visiting again. Amazingly, there’s no entrance fee here.

From the top, one would hardly suspect the wonders below.
The well is 5 levels deep. While decorative, the galleries also help buttress the side walls.
This is the first time I’ve seen the well completely dry. On previous trips, water filled most of the bottom arch. Looking at the bricks, it appears that water used to come up to the top of the top arch.
Looking up to the top of the stepwell.
A closer look at the balcony design.
A floral design in one of the many niches in the stepwell.
Another niche.
Each time I have come, more visitors have been at the site.
