China - Beijing - Hutong District

Saturday, 20 April 2019

Our first excursion of the day was to visit the hutong (alleyways, narrow streets) district -- what remains of the old Beijing. While many hutong have been torn down for modern buildings, a significant number still remain. In Mao's time, the courtyard houses were occupied by multiple families, but today many have returned to private ownership.

The Drum Tower north of the Forbidden City. Behind it to left (and barely visible) is the Bell Tower.
Typical hutong passage.
A large street in the hutong district.
Some of the larger courtyard houses have elaborate entries.
We visited a courtyard house owned by a prominent artist.
One of the halls in the house serves as studio and office.
Some of the artist's work.
