China - Beijing - Summer Palace

Sunday, 21 April 2019

Our last stop in Beijing was the Summer Palace. This large park has administrative and residential structures where the emperors of the Qing dynasty lived and worked in the stifling Beijing summers. Although the Forbidden City is only a few miles away, the wooded park environment makes a huge difference in the ambient temperatures.

The "Long Corridor" is a 780 m long covered walkway along Kunming Lake.
The Long Corridor
The interior of the Long Corridor is decorated with paintings of the Chinese countryside. No two paintings are identical.

Stone mosaic walkway.
The Tower of the Fragrance of Buddha sits on Longevity Hill, composed of fill dirt from the excavation of Kunming Lake.
The Marble Boat has a marble base (and does not float!) topped by a wooden superstructure painted to make it look like marble.
Colorful dragon boats ferry passengers around the lake.
The Jade Peak Dagoba stands behind Kunming Lake.
The Seventeen-Arch Bridge crosses Kunming Lake.
