China - Xi'an - Great Tang Mall

Monday, 22 April 2019

During the Tang Dynasty Xi'an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, leading Xi'an to be a prosperous, cosmopolitan city. Today it is no longer the national capital, but is the capital and largest city in Shaanxi province. Just behind our hotel was a major pedestrian shopping mall, the Great Tang Mall. The mall plays off Tang Dynasty history with themed sculptures and lanterns, along with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

During the day the mall looks interesting, but not that special.
At night it turns into a Disneyland-like park of light, sound, and aromas.
The Great Wild Goose Pagoda ("Dayan Ta") anchors the northern end of the mall.
The center of the mall is filled with sculptures and displays of the Tang Dynasty and the Silk Road.
There are some elaborate Chinese Lanterns.
More lights in trees.
A carved pillar.
The southern end of the mall ends with a large stage and plaza with live performances.
The pillars at the southern end of the mall are illuminated with ever-changing patterns of light.
The next day, when we returned to the mall for dinner, we passed what appeared to be fanciful parade floats staged at the southern end of the mall.
