The statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Jains. The huge 57-foot high statue was carved in situ from a single granite outcrop, and the temple was built around it.
Vindhyagiri Hill from a distance. The statue is at the very top center. |
A telephoto shot of the top of the hill showing the statue towering above the surrounding walls. |
To get to the top of the hill you must climb almost 700 steps. Barefeet are preferred, but you may wear socks. |
Taking a short break on the way up the hill. |
Just when you think you may be near the top, you turn a corner and see nothing but more steps. |
This photo shows how the temple was built around rock outcrops. |
If you have trouble negotiating the climb, you may be able to ride up in a chair -- there are only a limited number available and they cannot be reserved. |
The destination. It is so much more impressive than this photo. |
