Shravanabelagola

The statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Jains. The huge 57-foot high statue was carved in situ from a single granite outcrop, and the temple was built around it.

Vindhyagiri Hill from a distance. The statue is at the very top center.
A telephoto shot of the top of the hill showing the statue towering above the surrounding walls.
To get to the top of the hill you must climb almost 700 steps. Barefeet are preferred, but you may wear socks.
Taking a short break on the way up the hill.
Just when  you think you may be near the top, you turn a corner and see nothing but more steps.
This photo shows how the temple was built around rock outcrops.
If you have trouble negotiating the climb, you may be able to ride up in a chair -- there are only a limited number available and they cannot be reserved.
The destination. It is so much more impressive than this photo.
The statue to the left of the statue. A similar one is on the right.
