Santa Cruz - Cerro Dragon - Iguanas & Birds

Wednesday, 29 August 2018
Galapagos Day 5

We started the day with a hike around Cerro Dragon ("Dragon Hill") to see the land iguanas. They didn't disappoint. There were plenty of birds and marine iguanas as well.

The Cerro Dragon area is known for its large number of land iguanas.
Land iguanas can grow up to 1 m (3 ft) in length.
The iguanas are relatively easy to photograph because they like to bask in the sun.
When we first came ashore, the iguanas were basking in the sun. Once the day started to warm up, they started moving into the shade or their burrows.
Face to face with a land iguana.  Land iguanas seem to have a self-satisfied smirk on their face.
Marine iguanas were common along the shore.
Marine iguanas have a Klingon-esque face.
You don't see it very often, but as their name implies, marine iguanas are good swimmers and feed on algae.

On to the birds (which, of course, are closely related to reptiles):

I finally got a good silhouette of a frigatebird in flight.
We saw a number of great blue herons during the week, but this was the only one I managed to photograph.
A black-necked stilt in the brackish lagoons near the shore.
