Santa Cruz - Puerto Ayora

Galapagos Day 4

Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz is the largest town in the Galapagos. Cruise ships stop here to reprovision mid-voyage. It's also the home of the Charles Darwin Research Station (next blog post).

The fish market features spiny lobsters.
The town cemetery has a colorful wall surrounding it.
The cemetery is an above-ground one because the ground is solid rock (lava), and  it's too difficult to dig graves.
A mockingbird posed for us.
Seeds of the button mangrove.
We got to see some of the "tree" prickly pear cacti up close.
The "bark" of the prickly pear tree shows its cactus beginnings.
And finally, my favorite art work of the trip. A riff on the Sistine Chapel, with a tortoise as Adam, Charles Darwin as God, and boobies, frigatebirds, and flying tortoises rather than cherubs. This was on the back wall in The Rock cafe.
