Today we traveled from Lima to Cusco, and then down to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley. Cusco is so high (11,500 ft above sea level), that most tours recommend that you spend a night or two at a lower (but still substantial) elevation before spending time in Cusco or hiking around Machu Picchu. Urubamba is only about 8,000 ft high.
We had lunch in Cusco before traveling on, and our restaurant (the fabulous Peruvian-Japanese "Limo Cocina Nikkei") overlooked the main plaza ("Plaza de Armas", of course) where a school anniversary parade was taking place.

The Cusco cathedral is on one side of the Plaza de Armas, where school anniversary parade was taking place. |
The bell tower of Iglesia La Merced rises above rooftops, as seen from our restaurant on the Plaza de Armas. |
Back to the parade: the parade queen? or an Incan empress? |
An Incan emperor? |
The parade ended with several dance groups of young boys. |
