Galapagos Day 3
Our morning excursion was to Zodiac (if that can be a verb) and snorkel around Champion Islet just off Floreana.
Sea birds were all around us, skimming the water looking for food. |
Brown noddies roosting on rocks just above the water. |
More of the tree-sized giant prickly pear cactus. Like the finches and mockingbirds (nightingales), the Opuntia genus has seen radiative adaptation on the islands, with six species and fourteen varieties seen in the Galapagos. |
Prickly pear can even get a hold on a vertical bluff. |
Snorkeling
I have a cheap waterproof camera to take photos while snorkeling -- strictly point-and-shoot. The quality is somewhat lacking, but the photos are fun to look at.
A yellow-tailed surgeonfish swims above sea urchins. |
Pencil-spined sea urchin and an unidentified fish that was quite common. |
Schools of yellow-tailed surgeonfish were common. |
I could not identify this neon-turquoise fish, but it stood out clearly among the other fish. |
At first I though this was seaweed on the bottom, then I realized it was a school of thousands of small dark fish. |
