Sombrero Chino

Galapagos Day 6

After lunch, we relocated to the channel between Sombrero Chino and Santiago. Here we took a Zodiac ride to see penguins and sea lions.

Sombrero Chino really does resemble a "Chinese Hat".
The landscape of Santiago, just a few hundred meters across a channel from Sombrero Chino. A sea lion rests on the rocks in the center of the photo.
A pelican keeps watch from a perch on the rocks.
Penguins! As we watched, two of the penguins entered the water. These penguins are much shorter than the ones you usually see in zoos. When standing, they are only about 35 cm (14 inches) tall.
A swimming penguin.
The largest penguin is the juvenile. All of the "baby fat" will be lost to provide enough energy to molt into adult feathers.
There are a lot of submerged rock in this area.
A large female sea lion came out of the water on Sombrero Chino,

We were one of the last Zodiacs to return to the ship, and we could watch as the earlier Zodiacs were loaded back on board.
