China - Beijing - The Great Wall

Saturday, 20 April 2019

In the afternoon we visited the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, which is easily accessible from Beijing. (Actually, large parts of the wall are within the Beijing municipality, which is roughly the size of Belgium!)

Watchtowers along the wall are spaced two arrow shots apart, so that the entire wall could be defended.
Views from the wall are impressive, especially to the north.
Another view.
We were there!
The wall stretches for thousands of miles, although most of it has crumbled to its base, and only a few sections have been restored.
The wall hugs ridge lines and mountain tops to maintain its defensive position.
We made it a short way up this steep section before we had to turn around in time to return to Beijing.
The steep section is paved with uneven stone steps. Even the un-stepped parts were uneven and easy to trip on.
Looking back at a relatively flat section of the wall -- still a lot of up-and-down.
