Xi'an is one of the few places in China with a completely intact city wall. In Xi'an's heyday, this was the inner city wall; an outer wall was even more extensive, enclosing about 30 square miles. (Today's wall encloses about 5 square miles.)
There are four gates through the walls: north, south, east, and west. (Today a number of additional roads tunnel through the walls.) We entered through the west gate and walked up to the top of the wall. |
The wall is 9 miles long and can be walked or bicycled. |
In addition to gates, there are guard towers along the wall. |
A moat outside the wall provided additional security. |
A large courtyard (and originally, a well) is within the gate. |
