China - Beijing - Tiananmen Square & National Museum

Sunday, 21 April 2019

We started the day with a return to Tiananmen Square for a visit to the National Museum of China. We're traveling with the VMFA, and the two museums have collaborated on an exchange of objects for special exhibitions, so our group was able to get a guided tour of the History of China galleries. The museum was quite crowded, which made it difficult to view the exhibits.

It was Sunday, and the crowds were increased over weekdays. Security was tight, and we were re-routed on our way to the museum. There's no arguing with security personnel.

The Arrow Tower at the end of Tiananmen Square. The long line is to go through security to enter the square.
The view across Tiananmen Square from the museum. (We were too close to the museum to get a good photo of it.) In the middle of the square is the Monument to the People's Heroes. In the background is the Great Hall of the People (legislature).  The security fences keeping people in distinct areas are in evidence. The long line across the street is for visiting Mao's Tomb.

A set of bells (top) and stone chimes (bottom) in the National Museum.
The National Museum is the world's largest museum building, over 2 million square feet. It would take several days to see the entire museum.
